About Liberated Kids & Liberated Youth

Liberated Kids is a community-based self-directed education (SDE) community in Oakland serving children ages 5–15 and their families. We cultivate a joyful, liberatory space where children lead their own learning, rooted in autonomy, community care, and intersectional justice. We center BIPOC, QT-BIPOC, and neurodivergent children and families, and we operate as a village — one where every adult plays an active role in building the conditions for children to thrive.

Liberated Youth is an emerging program for tweens and teens, growing out of the Liberated Kids community.

Deschooling and Orientation Period

For those new to Liberated Kids, the first 2–4 months of employment is a dedicated orientation period. The employee will take active steps to immerse themselves in LK's culture, values, community relationships, and internal systems before taking on full decision-making responsibilities. This may include readings, conversations with staff and families, and collaborative planning with the founding team.
